8 school records fall in 2nd meet of the season

The track and field teams competed Thursday in a 10-school meet at Louisburg. The boys once again finished first, and the girls took third.

A total of eight school records were broken. For the girls team, Rissa Moore won the discus (school record) and was fourth in shot put. Ari Atkinson and Aaliyah Hinnant tied for third in the high jump, both breaking the previous school record. In the 100 hurdles Hinnant and Atkinson were first and second — with Hinnant breaking a school record — Vanessa Cabello was fourth and Rayla Golightly was sixth. Hinnant easily won the 100, and Atkinson was fourth. Cabello won the 300 hurdles and broke her own school record by more than 4 seconds. In the 200, Golightly was seventh.

For the boys, Caleb Stahl was second and Will Wright was eighth in the discus. Stahl was second in the shot put, Carson Koesters was third and Anthony Washington was fourth. Michael Spong competed in the long jump for the first time and finished fourth. In the high jump, Hiet Zell was third, Percy Shorter was fifth, and Ryan Wright and James Carmack tied for seventh.

In the relays:

  • the 4×800 of Spong, Alex Rivera, Michael Dunn, and Gabe Lewis won easily and set a school record
  • the 4×200 of Josiah Mitchell, Carter Davenport, Hersh Pare, and Ryan Wright was second
  • the 4×100 of Zell, Jamal Biggs, James Carmack, and Shorter was first
  • the 4×400 of Rivera, Nathan Wright, Keegan Jones, and Lewis was second, but dipped under four minutes for the first time and broke the previous school record by eight seconds

Individually on the track, JPII went 1-2-3 in the 100 (video), with Zell winning, Shorter in second, and Carmack in third. Rivera was third and Lewis was fifth in the 1600; Jones won the 400 and broke his own school record, and Nathan Wright was seventh.

Michael Dunn ran a gutsy race to finish fourth in the 800. Spong was sixth in the 3200 and set a school record in the process. And finally, in the 200 Carmack, Jones, Zell, and Shorter were second, fourth, sixth, and eighth, respectively. James broke the previous school record.

The Saints will be back in action on Monday a little closer to home at Southside.
