One bad inning again proved to be a nemesis for the John Paul II Catholic High School baseball team as it lost 10-4 to host Wayne Country Day on Tuesday.

A day after giving up six runs in the fifth inning of an eventual 7-6 victory over Freedom Christian, the Saints again gave up six in the fifth to the Chargers, who extended a 4-3 advantage to 10-3. JPII got one back in the top of the sixth when Joseph Caporossi — pinch-running for Caleb Thrift — scored on a single by Axel Keller, but that’s where the rally ended.

The Saints dropped to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the CPIC. WCDS improved to 6-4 and 2-0.

JPII jumped on top early with three runs in the top of the first, chasing the Chargers’ starting pitcher after only one out in the process. Nike Wiggins singled to left to start it, then went to third on a single by Ray Shaw, who then took second on defensive indifference. J.T. Williams grounded out to second, but Wiggins scored and Shaw went to third. Shaw then scored on a single by Keller, who eventually came around to score on a double by James Donofrio.

WCDS scored a pair of runs each in the third and fourth innings before the fifth-inning eruption.

The Saints had 10 hits, with Shaw leading the way with three. Keller had a pair, and Wiggins, Donofrio, Williams, Thrift and Max Mason getting one each.

JPII now faces a big game at home Thursday against a much-improved Wayne Christian. The Eagles beat Wayne Prep 19-0 on Monday to move to 3-1 overall and are 1-0 in the CPIC, having beaten Greenfield 7-2 on March 14.
