The program’s first-ever event victory was among the highlights for the John Paul II Catholic High School track and field teams in the East of I-95 Invitational at Rocky Mount on Saturday.Â
Freshman Gabe Lewis led comfortably for most of the race as he took the boys 3,200, becoming the first Saint to notch an individual title. He almost accomplished the feat earlier in the meet in the 1,600 as he took second, less than one second out of first.
Tyler Moore also scored in both races, finishing second in the 3,200 and fifth in the 1,600. Davis Walsh was fourth in the 3,200.
Quinn McCaffrey was JPII’s other scorer as he placed seventh in the long jump.
Freshman Peyton Davies again scored all the points for the girls team. She was in the hunt for victories in both the 1,600 and 800, but finished third in each.
Other noteworthy performances were turned in by Lilly Lyon (school record in the 300 hurdles); Keiveon Moore (10th in the 100); Michael Dunn (PRs in both the 1,600 and 800); Walsh (PR in the 1,600); the 4×100 relay (seventh) of A.J. Koesters, Tucker Holmes, McCaffrey, and Keiveon Moore; Johnallen King (PR in the 400); and Holmes (11th in the shot put).
JPII will compete next Saturday, March 25, in the Cape Fear Relays at UNC-Wilmington.
