Untimely errors led to a tough loss for the John Paul II Catholic High School baseball team on Tuesday afternoon at Parrott Academy.

The Saints committed three errors on the day – all in the first inning – and ended up losing 3-1, spoiling a quality performance by Quinn McCaffrey on the mound. The freshman surrendered only three hits in a complete-game effort, striking out four and consistently keeping the Parrott batters off balance with his mix of pitches.

An errant throw, a misplayed grounder and a passed ball in the bottom of the first led to two of Parrott’s runs. John Paul II scored its run in the top of the third. Cash Daniels-Moye reached on a single, then stole second and third before scoring on a sacrifice fly to right by Jude Wisman-Raven.

Parrott scored an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a grounder down the first-base line with one out after the leadoff batter had reached on a walk and then stolen second. The Saints, who in the top of the second inning had squandered an opportunity with the bases loaded and no outs, had runners on first and second in the top of the seventh, but were unable to bring them in.

John Paul II had four hits – one each from Daniels-Moye, Wisman-Raven, Tyler Winkler and Ryker Butcher.

The Saints dropped to 3-3, and Parrott improved to 5-1. JPII will be back in action Wednesday at home against Faith Christian. That game originally was scheduled for Thursday, but was moved up a day because of the threat of rain.
