Softball Head Coach Kylie Gilroy has decided to step down to pursue a master’s degree program; she will continue in her role at JPII as a teacher in the math department. “I want to thank Coach Gilroy for all of her hard work over the past two years to get our softball program started,” said Director of Athletics Sean Murphy. “The team made great progress under her leadership and she created a foundation that I believe will benefit our softball program going forward.”
Murphy has named Monte Weathington, who was Gilroy’s assistant coach, as her successor. “I am excited to go from helping Coach Gilroy last year to continuing to build this program into one that softball players want to be a part of,” Weathington said.
Weathington has nearly 15 years of experience coaching softball at different levels: starting at 6U and all the way up through high school including travel softball with the Carolina Dirt Devils and Carolina Shockwave. In 2015, he was the head coach for the 8U Washington All Stars team that won a state title and finished 3rd in the Babe Ruth World Series. While he is proud to have guided that team that far, he is more proud that they were recognized with the Sportsmanship Award. “To help them become good people and productive adults is way more important than any win.”
Weathington attributes his success on multiple levels to his coaching style, which is a philosophy our players will find familiar from the classroom. “I love to teach the right way to do something by taking the time to break it down on an individual level with one-on-one teaching when needed.”
